ABOUT THE MULTI-CYCLE TRAINING SYSTEM

The two-cycle training system delivers several possibilities for continuity of education, allowing more time for students to develop their abilities. The objectives and principles of the Bologna Process are to establish an easily understood and easily compared training system (eg. introduction of the Diploma Supplement) as well as the introduction of an education system based on two consecutive training phases (called cycles). The qualification obtained in the first cycle (bachelor’s level) enables its holder to take up employment in the labour market.
Furthermore, to enable students to enter the second cycle of training (master’s level), it is necessary to design a universal credit transfer system, to promote a wide range of mobility for lecturers, researchers and students, to develop cooperation in the field of quality assurance in European higher education, and to promote the European dimension of higher education.

There are two types at both training levels. Hence the different names in the basic bachelor’s and the master’s programmes:

  • BA – Bachelor of Arts,
  • BSc – Bachelor of Sciences,
  • MA – Master of Arts,
  • MSc – Master of Sciences.

They indicate whether the qualification testified by the degree was obtained in the field of Arts or Science. BSc and MSc training programmes are provided in the following fields of study: agriculture, IT, engineering, national defense and military, Medical and Health, Sports, Science.
BA and MA courses include the training areas in the humanities, economics, law and management, arts, arts management, teacher training, social studies.
The terms come from the English words ’science’ and ’arts’. There is no difference in the training level of the different types of the Bachelor’s degree (BSc/BA), similarly to the Master’s degree (MSc, MA).

Bachelor’s programme

The first cycle of training is the Baccalaureate, bachelor’s programme (in short BA, BSc). It comprises 6 to 8 semesters (depending on the field of study). The bachelor course provides training in one field of study, thus on completion one can obtain qualification in that chosen area. During the first cycle, which offers a bachelor’s degree, one can acquire professional skills and competence that can prove useful in the labour market, and which entitles them to seek employment as defined by law. At the same time, the qualification equips graduates with adequate academic foundation in the relevant field to continue their studies in the master’s cycle and obtain a master’s degree.

The degree requirements and academic regulations determine what professional qualifications may be obtained in the given cycle of training. Where the regulations mention college-level degree and qualification, it also has to mean bachelor’s level degree and relevant professional qualification. Where the regulations mention first cycle training and professional qualification, it must stand for college-level training and qualification, too. Consequently, a college-level degree earned in the traditional (pre-Bologna) training system must be recognised as equivalent to the degree obtained on completion of the first cycle training of the multi-cycle education system. The Bachelor’s degree is the first level of qualification, which enables its holder to enter the Master’s level training.

Master’s training programme

In the master’s training programme (magister, master; abbreviated as MA, MSc), students can obtain a Master's degree along with a professional qualification. Master’s is the second level of higher education. Admission is available for those awarded with a Bachelor’s degree and a professional qualification, or a college-level degree as an equivalent, or a university-level degree, or a Master’s degree as an alternative. The exact requirements for admission are determined by the higher education institutions themselves. This training lasts 2-4 semesters (excluding teacher training, which can last up to 5 semesters). Upon obtaining the master’s degree there is a possibility for students to start their working career, or to participate in the doctorate training (Ph.D.), which prepares them to get their academic degrees.

The degree requirements and academic regulations determine what professional qualifications may be obtained in the given master’s training, which empower graduates to fill positions defined by law. Where the regulations mention university degree and university-level qualification, it must stand for master’s degree and qualification, too. Where the regulations mention Master’s degree and qualification, university degree and university-level qualification is also to be understood. Consequently, a university-level degree earned in the traditional (pre-Bologna) training system must be recognised as equivalent to the master’s degree obtained on successful completion of the second-cycle training of the multi-cycle education system.

Higher level vocational training

Higher level vocational training is part of the higher education system. This type of professional training is provided by higher education institutions for university students - or in accordance with an agreement between secondary schools and higher education institutions - for secondary school students. On the one hand, it is integrated in the basic bachelor programme of the higher education institution, and students can be awarded a higher level qualification included in the National Registry of Training (OKJ).
Subjects completed in the higher level vocational training can be honored in the first cycle of the training, depending on the decision of the higher education institution. The training system ensures entry from the first cycle of the education system towards higher level vocational training, too.
